Birmingham’s architecture
The changing face of the architecture in Birmingham is reflective of the second city’s evolution over time.
The 14th Century Old Crown pub which can be found in Digbeth is thought to be the only surviving complete medieval building remaining in Birmingham. The pub itself is a good example of the regeneration of Birmingham City centre and in particular, the Digbeth area as the old pub is backed by a bohemian garden with a slight industrial feel.
Birmingham benefited greatly from the industrial revolution. This financial boost brought with it a number of big Victorian architectural projects. A great example of Birmingham’s Victorian buildings may be familiar to anyone that has visited the German Christmas market as a large part of that is adjacent to Birmingham Town Hall.
The Town Hall was originally opened in 1834 and underwent a major renovation between 2002/2007 and is now used as an events venue.
Birmingham continues to move with the times, 2004 saw the unveiling of the now iconic Selfridges building, part of the refurbished Bullring shopping centre.
Birmingham’s New Street train station has been redeveloped, this was completed in 2015. Along with the upgraded train station came Grand Central. This shopping centre that sits above New Street, replaced the Pallasades Shopping Centre and features an atrium that mirrors the track points outside of the station in an innovative piece of design.
